But most people don’t realize that Boston has been privy
to most of America’s other revolutions, including the rise (and fall)
of the whaling and shipping ages, and America’s global ascendance during
the Industrial Revolution. The Hub’s large Irish and Italian immigrant
communities paved the way for ethnic groups to make their voices heard in
politics.
In modern times, Boston spearheaded the high tech boom that currently fuels
the American economy’s newest gilded age. The Route 128 corridor that
rings the city houses more Internet start-ups per capita than any city in
the world outside of Silicon Valley.
In many ways Boston is also one large college town, with 70-plus universities,
including Berklee, Emerson, Harvard and MIT. But above all, Boston’s
soul is alive; optimistically greeting any challenge the future chooses to
throw its way.
